“Why Cancun’s Mayan Ruins Are Worth the Escape from the Resort”

Palm Tree Leaves and Sea

As winter’s chill sets in we know at Sierra Travel that our phones are about to starting ringing and dinging with clients who know that they will be more than ready to swap their winter boots for sandals in a few weeks. Cancun is well known for its turquoise waters, beautiful beaches, wonderful resorts to choose from and vibrant culture. What many of our clients might not know about are some of the amazing places to visit if you wish to plan a day out of exploring to learn about a little history while also throwing in some wonderful views and adventure. We hope that this gives you a little inspiration beyond the beaches and resorts.

Exploring the Mysteries of the Mayan Ruins

While visiting the Cancun area you won’t want to miss out on this fascinating glimpse into the rich history and cultural heritage of the Maya civilization. Chichen Itza stands out as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, visitors can witness the iconic pyramid, El Castillo (Temple of Kukulkan), a remarkable structure that served as a calendar and was dedicated to the feathered serpent god, Kukulkan. This wonderful area will take a while to explore and will most likely be a highlight for those who are history lovers.

Another captivating site is Tulum, it is the only Mayan city built on the coast. Tulum is a little closer to Cancun and offers a stunning backdrop of the sea. You will experience a more relaxed vibe in Tulum compared to Chichen Itza and the opportunity to enjoy the beach and a swim if you need to cool off before heading back to your resort.

Visiting the Coba Ruins will offer an experience of climbing the pyramid which you won’t get to do at the other two locations. Once you reach the top of the pyramid the views will be your greatest reward. You will also get the pleasure of experiencing fewer crowds, biking and walking paths and a lush jungle setting.

As you can see each of these destinations will offer something a little different for you to experience. Our suggestion is if you would like to be out for a full day and enjoy history you will want to take a tour to Chichen Itza, however we do suggest combing this will something like visiting the turtles or zip lining if you want a little extra thrown in there. This site will take you the furthest distance from Cancun. Coba is great for those seeking a little more activity and adventure, it is about 30 minutes closer than Chichen Itza so it will still be a longer day but an active one. Last is Tulum which is only 1.5 hours from Cancun with great views of the sea and the opportunity to enjoy the beach and a dip in the water.

If any of these are on your bucket list our suggestion is to choose a resort that will have you closer to these destination. For example, rather than staying in Playa Mujeres or Cancun we would suggest staying closer to Playa Del Carmen. We have many to choose from and a wonderful tour company that will help to make your day extra special with adding additional adventures to your day based on what you hope to experience.

We hope to have the opportunity to work with you on your next vacation to the Cancun area at Sierra Travel in Sylvan Lake .
